Courses

Do I have to take specific courses to be in the fellowship?

Yes, all fellows will simultaneously be completing the requirements for the MDHHS endorsed Child Welfare Certificate. Students must complete the approved coursework to earn the certificate.

If I earned the Child Welfare Certificate Endorsement during my BSW program, will I have to retake those courses?

No, you would not have to retake the courses if the CWCE was previously earned. 

How does the certificate benefit me as a student and future social worker?

The certificate and fellowship opportunity provide education and training in a unique way that directly prepares students to begin working in child welfare. Students will enter the workforce with advanced experience and knowledge compared to their peers. Students will indicate that they received the Certificate during their application and interview process.  

Stipend

How will the stipend be provided to me?

The stipend distribution is dependent on each University. This could either be through a Financial Aid award or through an employment payment.

How can I spend my stipend?

The stipend is expected to be used toward educational expenses.

Field Placement

Where can I complete my field placement?

Field placements must be in a child welfare setting. This can be in a public, private or tribal agency learning foster care, children’s protective services, adoption or licensing.

Do I have to find my own field placement?

No, you can work with your field placement office to help you find a field placement.

I am already working in child welfare, can I have an employment based field placement?

That depends, this would require an agreement with your field placement office, check with your University.

Employment Payback

I am from out of state, can I participate in the fellowship?

Yes, you are able to participate in the fellowship as long as you complete your education in-state and are willing to relocate to Michigan to complete the employment payback.

Can I complete my employment payback at a private agency in Michigan?

Yes, employment payback can occur at a private agency as long as the majority function of this role is considered Child Welfare practice.

I am unsure if my position qualifies for the employment payback. Who can I contact to find out?

The program coordinator at the University you attended can verify if the position qualifies for the employment payback.

I completed the Child Welfare Certificate, do I still need to attend Pre-Service Institute?

Yes, as a new hire in child welfare you will still participate in a shortening version of PSI. 

Where can I find job postings?

Many of the private and tribal agencies have their own respective career pages, for positions with MDHHS, you can find jobs here.

I am looking for an entry level position with MDHHS, what should I look for?

Entry level positions are classified as Services Specialists 9-11. These positions can either be as a foster care case manager or children’s protective services investigator.

I have experience and am eligible for a specialized position, such as a MYOI coordinator, would that qualify for the payback?

Yes, some specialized positions and roles are included for the payback, you can find a list of these positions here.

I am a part-time student working full time in child welfare, does that time count toward payback?

The payback period begins after graduation. A student cannot be in a repayment period while receiving Title IV-E funds.
